Appetite suppressant medications may be prescribed by the physicians at the
Metabolic Nutrition Program when indicated in the treatment of obesity.

We recognize that the cause of over-eating is rarely appetite alone, and therefore medications will have limited benefit.

Phentermine (Ionamin, Fastin) suppresses appetite by increasing brain levels of norepinephrine.

It often causes dry mouth. It has been associated with diarrhea or constipation, unpleasant taste, restlessness or insomnia. Rarely, psychotic episodes have occurred. These side-effects abate promptly when the dosage is reduced or the drug is discontinued. It is not prescribed in patients with unstable angina pectoris or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

These medications may impair ones ability to perform hazardous activities requiring mental alertness or physical coordination.

In addition, it is conceivable that other side effects could occur which have not been observed to date. Most early side-effects of these drugs tend to improve or disappear over several weeks.

It is recommended that appetite suppressant drugs be discontinued at least two weeks prior to surgical anesthesia.
